Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
